Abstract:

Microscaleacoustofluidics is the physics of ultrasound propagating in and interactingwith fluids, solutions, and particle suspensions on the sub-millimeter scale.In the lecture, I will summarize some of the recent results within continuum theoryand numerical simulation of microscale acoustofluidic systems that I haveobtained in collaboration with my students and international colleagues. Themain emphasis will be on three dynamical ultrasound effects: The acousticradiation force acting on suspended micro- and nanoparticles includingthermoviscous effects, the acoustic streaming appearing in the fluid, and thenewly discovered acoustic body force acting on inhomogeneous solutions. Shortbiography:

Henrik Bruusreceived his PhD degree in physics from the Niels Bohr Institute, University ofCopenhagen in 1990, and then worked as postdoc at Nordic Institute ofTheoretical Physics 1990-92, Yale University 1992-94 and CNRS Grenoble 1994-96.He returned to the Niels Bohr Institute as associate professor 1997-2001,before moving to the Technical University of Denmark in 2001. There, he becamefull professor of lab-on-a-chip systems in 2005 and of theoretical physics in2012. His current research interests comprise micro/nano fluidics,acoustofluidics, electrokinetics, the physics of on-chip cell manipulation, themotion of sugar in living plants, and topology-optimized microflows. He has(co)authored 140 journal papers (including Rev. Mod. Phys., Nature Comm., PRL,PRE., PRApplied, Lab on Chip) on condensed matter physics and microfluidics,200 conference papers, and 2 monographs, the latest being TheoreticalMicrofluidics, Oxford University Press (2008).
